West Bengal's Model Code of Conduct Activated After Election Schedule Release
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) - The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in effect throughout West Bengal as of Sunday, following the Election Commission of India's (ECI) announcement of the election schedule for the state Assembly. The MCC has officially commenced from March 15, 2026, as per an announcement from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal.
This notification was circulated by the Additional Chief Electoral Officer to senior state government officials, indicating that the MCC will govern all candidates, political parties, and both state and Union administrations.
The communication was directed to Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and department Secretaries, including private secretaries to ministers. Officials have been instructed to strictly comply with the Model Code of Conduct following the ECI's electoral schedule.
Furthermore, the officials were reminded that any requests for clarification or exemptions regarding the MCC must adhere to an established protocol. Proposals should originate from the relevant state department and subsequently be reviewed by a screening committee chaired by the Chief Secretary of West Bengal.
Upon the committee's approval, the proposal may then be submitted to the Election Commission via the Chief Electoral Officer for additional evaluation.
The communication emphasized that no MCC-related proposals should be initiated by subordinate offices, and all matters must follow designated administrative procedures.
These directives have been disseminated for immediate awareness and action by the relevant departments.
Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission revealed that the West Bengal Assembly elections will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results to be declared on May 4.
With the implementation of the MCC, there will be restrictions on government announcements, policy changes, and official publicity concerning political figures until the conclusion of the election process.
