New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) The announcement of the by-election results for 12 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set for Wednesday, with counting commencing at dawn amidst enhanced security measures.
The bypolls were held to fill vacancies created when several councillors transitioned to the Delhi Assembly and Parliament. Voting took place on November 30, featuring 51 candidates, including 26 women.
As per the State Election Commission (SEC), the voter turnout across the 12 wards reached 38.51 per cent by 5:30 PM on polling day. A total of 580 polling booths facilitated the process, with Chandni Mahal recording the highest turnout at 55.93 per cent. Officials reported that the polling was largely peaceful and proceeded without major incidents.
For the counting, the SEC has designated 10 counting centres throughout the city, located in Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil Lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole Market, Pushp Vihar, and Mandawali. Each centre is equipped with secure rooms, monitored entry and exit points, and constant surveillance.
The SEC has closely collaborated with District Election Officers, Returning Officers, General Observers, and security agencies to ensure transparency and efficiency in the electoral process.
An SEC official indicated that the results are anticipated to be released by late morning or shortly thereafter.
These by-elections hold considerable political significance for the configuration of the 250-member MCD House.
Currently, the BJP has 115 councillors, while the AAP holds 99 seats, the Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15, and Congress has 8.
The BJP aims for a clean sweep of all 12 seats, which would boost its tally to 127 and reinforce a clear majority.
A strong performance by the BJP could enhance the standing of Chief Minister Gupta and positively reflect on her initiatives, including the e-bus, health, and insurance welfare schemes, as well as arrangements for Chhath devotees.
The Election Commission will release all results on its official portal, ceodelhi.gov.in, once the counting concludes.
