Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma lauds Madanriting Dorbar Shnong, inaugurates ambulance

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday, 2 May praised the Dorbar Shnong of Madanriting, East Khasi Hills district, for its community-driven initiatives, stating that recognising contributions from people across all walks of life can bring meaningful change to society. Speaking at a programme held at St Peter's Secondary School in Shillong, Sangma also inaugurated an ambulance and a mortuary van procured by the locality council for its residents.

What the Dorbar Shnong Did

The Dorbar Shnong — a traditional village or locality council central to governance among the Khasi and Jaintia communities of Meghalaya — organised the event to celebrate its community welfare efforts. The council, headed by a Rangbah Shnong (headman), oversees local administration, dispute resolution, maintenance of public spaces, and preservation of customary practices. Though not a constitutional body like a municipal council or panchayat institution, it functions as an influential grassroots authority, often working alongside the government on civic and development matters.
