Shillong, Aug 13 (NationPress) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the Infrastructure and Public Amenities Improvement Project at Iewduh (Bara Bazar) -- recognized as the state's oldest traditional market.
This initiative, backed by the North Eastern Council (NEC), aims to revitalize the area into a dynamic, sustainable, and efficient urban marketplace that honors the region's cultural heritage while integrating modern design and infrastructure.
The overall budget for this project is Rs 45 crore, with Phase 1 (Rs 5 crore) currently in progress, Phase 2 (Rs 14 crore) commencing today, and Phase 3 (Rs 20 crore) planned for the future.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Jyotiraditya Scindia, the DoNER Minister, for his assistance.
Following the foundation stone ceremony, the Chief Minister toured the Iewduh market for an inspection.
This visit marks his second, with the first occurring on May 19 of this year.
The Chief Minister remarked: “After nearly 35 years, Iewduh has not experienced significant development. This does not align with the economic growth narrative of our state, where progress is evident, yet Iewduh remains stagnant.”
Addressing the goal of achieving a $10 billion economy, he emphasized: “All the advancements thus far mean little if we do not acknowledge the relentless efforts of our vendors, shopkeepers, entrepreneurs, and especially the women who tirelessly work here daily.”
He encouraged the 5,500 street vendors and shopkeepers to uphold cleanliness and support the redevelopment initiative.
During the event, Sangma officially introduced the Chief Minister’s Urban Livelihood Scheme (CM-ULG).
Regarding the CM ULG, he noted that the initial Rs 10,000 assistance is merely the beginning. He urged all eligible recipients to register promptly under the Hima Mylliem.
This financial aid will be directly deposited into their bank accounts.
At the event, the Chief Minister distributed checks to beneficiaries involved in this welfare program aimed at supporting informal livelihood activities in urban settings.
The CM-ULG scheme is designed to assist economically vulnerable individuals engaged in informal work across urban areas.
Prestone Tynsong, the Deputy Chief Minister, emphasized that upon completion of all beautification phases, Iewduh will rival the beauty of Police Bazar.
Another Deputy, Sniawbhalang Dhar, stated: “We aspire for our people to thrive, especially in their livelihoods. We are initiating development and enhancing infrastructure so that the shopkeepers at Iewduh are not left behind.”
The Chief Minister urged vendors to register with the Office of the Hima Mylliem to access the benefits of CM-ULG.
