Shillong, July 30 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, declared on Wednesday that the hill state is poised to embark on a journey towards economic growth, attracting investments as industry stakeholders show keen interest in the northeast region.
Sangma inaugurated the largest bottling plant in the northeast located in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills.
The bottling facility established by Varun Beverages Limited (PepsiCo) spans across a 37-acre area in the Mendipathar Industrial Area, with a remarkable investment of Rs 340 crore.
“This venture is a significant milestone for our state, as it will generate employment opportunities and directly and indirectly benefit the local populace,” stated the Chief Minister.
“This plant symbolizes the economic progress that Meghalaya is on the verge of achieving. It’s hard to believe that the largest bottling facility would be situated right here in Mendipathar,” he added.
Sangma emphasized that a project of this magnitude in Garo Hills would elevate the aspirations of the youth.
“The younger generation will witness the opportunities this plant will create for them. We can look forward to various prospects emerging in the region,” he mentioned.
The Chief Minister noted that the Mendipathar industrial area was envisioned in the 1990s, yet it remained devoid of investments for over 30 years.
“For three decades, no unit was established. There were hopes and expectations that went unfulfilled,” he expressed, reflecting on the aspirations of the late P.A. Sangma, who envisioned Mendipathar as a growth hub for Garo Hills.
“Today marks a moment of hope and the realization of that vision he had for Mendipathar and Meghalaya as a whole,” the CM remarked.
He acknowledged the contributions of the Nokma (village chief) and the residents of Mendipathar for their dedication in providing land for the establishment of the industrial area three decades ago.
The bottling plant is projected to employ nearly 500 individuals in the production and distribution of various PepsiCo products, including fruit-based juices. CM Sangma stated that this facility will create ancillary opportunities and spur a surge in economic activities.
“The workforce, including senior managers, will require housing, which locals can provide. Their daily expenditures in Mendipathar will gradually lead to the emergence of various businesses,” he added.
The Chief Minister also encouraged the community to capitalize on the upcoming economic activity, urging, “Our youth will be presented with diverse opportunities.”
Additionally, he announced plans for another plant to be established in the Tikrikilla Bajengdoba area, with 90% of the work already completed.
