Srinagar, Sep 26 (NationPress) Following Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's remarks labeling the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk as ‘very unfortunate’ last Friday, former Chief Minister and president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, also voiced her disapproval regarding Wangchuk's arrest.
In a statement on X, Mehbooba Mufti expressed: “The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk is profoundly troubling. A lifelong proponent of peace, sustainability, and truth is facing repercussions simply for insisting that promises are honored.”
“Currently, Leh is under curfew with internet services suspended—a grim reminder of what Kashmir has historically suffered. In today’s India, confronting authority comes with significant risks. How could a man dedicated to peace and non-violence find himself imprisoned?”
Following the Ministry of Home Affairs’ accusations against Sonam Wangchuk for provoking unrest in Leh, the police took him into custody on Friday afternoon.
Sonam Wangchuk had participated in a hunger strike since September 10, advocating for statehood, inclusion in the 6th schedule, and the preservation of Ladakh’s delicate ecosystem.
On September 24, widespread violence erupted in Leh when unruly crowds ignited a CRPF vehicle, targeting the personnel inside, as well as setting ablaze the local BJP office and other vehicles while engaging in intense stone-pelting against security forces.
Wangchuk ended his hunger strike on September 24 amidst the chaos.
Officials reported that security forces fired in self-defense, resulting in the deaths of four protesters and injuries to 70 others. A curfew was enforced in Leh, continuing for a third consecutive day.
On Thursday evening, a curfew was also announced in Kargil, with all educational institutions ordered to close until September 28 in the Ladakh Union Territory.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also revoked the FCRA registration certificate of the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), founded by Sonam Wangchuk.
As of Friday, internet services were suspended in the Ladakh region, and a tense calm lingered over Leh.
No relaxation of the curfew was provided on Friday, and sources indicated that it would persist without any easing on Saturday.
