Will Jammu's Statehood Decision Overturn J&K Leaders' Choice to Join Gandhi's India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 9 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister and current president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti stated on Friday that the recent actions taken by certain Hindu groups have undermined the choice made by the populace in the Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir to reject the two-nation theory proposed by Mohammad Ali Jinnah in favor of joining Mahatma Gandhi's secular India.
During a press conference held here, Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that the leadership of J&K aligned with the secular principles embodied by Gandhi, thus dismissing Jinnah's two-nation concept.
“The recent actions led by right-wing Hindu groups such as the BJP, RSS, and Bajrang Dal have effectively negated our leaders' commitment to join Gandhian secular India, thereby rejecting Jinnah's two-nation theory,” she remarked.
Mufti criticized the National Medical Commission (NMC)'s revocation of the permission for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College, labeling it as ‘dangerous and unfortunate’.
“A brief agitation by some right-wing Hindu groups led the NMC to withdraw permission from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College, targeting the cancellation of admissions for Muslim candidates who qualified through the NEET exam. Interestingly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had suggested the college's closure just a day prior to the NMC's decision, indicating a possible collusion between the Chief Minister and these right-wing factions,” she alleged.
She raised concerns about the calls for granting statehood to Jammu based on religious grounds, asserting that if such a scenario materializes, it would invalidate the rationale behind Kashmir's allegiance to secular India.
The PDP leader termed this development ‘dangerous’ as she believes that J&K has become a testing ground for such controversial decisions, which could then be implemented in other regions of the country.
“I am apprehensive that tomorrow, similar right-wing factions might demand the cancellation of our students' admissions in institutions beyond J&K. We have become a testing ground for decisions that could extend to other parts of the nation,” she claimed.
In response to questions regarding the ED raid controversy in West Bengal, she noted that organizations like NIA, ED, and the crime branch are conducting daily raids in Kashmir.
“When three chief ministers were detained in J&K in 2019, no significant political party in the rest of the country spoke out, and now they are facing a similar predicament. I am confident that Mamata Banerjee is a formidable leader and will confront these challenges resolutely,” she asserted.
