These elements have evidently influenced the state government's frantic efforts to address a chaotic incident, occurring just months ahead of the Assembly elections.

The debacle surrounding Lionel Messi in Kolkata has escalated beyond mere sports embarrassment. It has transformed into a significant political issue, with Mamata Banerjee's attempts at damage control highlighting the intense stakes of the looming elections.

While Messi’s events in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi showcased India's organizational abilities, the chaos in Kolkata revealed governance failures that the Opposition is ready to exploit. Therefore, the intense passion of Bengalis for sports and culture, set against the backdrop of the state’s politically charged environment, could pivot this incident into a referendum on leadership.

Mamata Banerjee’s administration and the Trinamool Congress party she heads are grappling with numerous obstacles. Intra-party power struggles, conflicts among Parliament members, and active members causing embarrassment have all contributed to the Trinamool's woes.

Additionally, disturbing incidents, including the rape and murder of an intern at the R. G. Kar Hospital and the teacher recruitment scam, have shaken the government. On December 13, at the Salt Lake Stadium, thousands of fans who paid high ticket prices could not see the football icon due to a crowd of VIPs. This led to frustrations manifesting in vandalism and attempts to breach security.

Messi, visibly uneasy, departed the venue after a mere 10 minutes. For a city eagerly anticipating his presence, the disappointment was acutely felt. The repercussions were swift, with opposition parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticizing Mamata Banerjee's government and the Trinamool party for what they termed as “criminal mismanagement.” Social media exploded with chaotic footage, amplifying the national embarrassment.

Banerjee publicly issued an unconditional apology, expressing her dismay over the mismanagement and apologizing to both the superstar and his supporters. A judicial inquiry led by a retired judge was announced to find out who is accountable and to avert future issues.

On December 16, show-cause notices were issued to the state’s director-general of police and the police commissioner of Bidhannagar (the venue of the incident), while the Bidhannagar deputy police commissioner was suspended in connection with the Messi debacle. A special investigation team (SIT) was also established to examine the occurrence per the inquiry committee's recommendations regarding the vandalism.

While her apology has triggered renewed criticism, with many Kolkatans deeming it mere lip service, the government’s recent actions are being branded by Mamata’s adversaries as another cover-up attempt. The timing is particularly sensitive, as the Trinamool seeks a fourth consecutive term in office in the upcoming elections amidst rising challenges from the BJP.

The Messi incident plays directly into the narratives of the Opposition, who are accusing the government of ineptitude, elitism, and a blatant disregard for the common populace.

The BJP has already positioned the incident as indicative of broader failures in law and order and public services. The disappointed fans who left the stadium, particularly among the urban middle class, idolize Messi and paid exorbitantly for tickets, may feel let down. This demographic is vital for the BJP's aspirations in Kolkata and its suburbs.
