Kolkata, Jan 21 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police apprehended two individuals on Tuesday in relation to the alleged gang-rape and murder of a minor girl in Basanti, located in the South 24 Parganas district.
The lifeless body of the girl was discovered in a field near her home on Monday evening.
The corpse was unearthed from beneath the soil in the field, shortly after a special court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the rape and murder of a female doctor from the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, to life imprisonment.
The individuals taken into custody have been named as Dipen Kayal and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.
According to sources from the district police, following the discovery of the victim's body, the authorities launched an investigation and began questioning local residents.
During the interrogation of the community members, the names of the two suspects emerged.
The police subsequently interrogated them further and, after noting significant inconsistencies in their accounts, ultimately arrested them on Tuesday morning. The arrested pair will be brought before a district court in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, later today, where the public prosecutor will seek police custody.
The minor girl, a Class 8 student, had been reported missing since January 9. Her family filed a missing persons report three days later, on January 12. The victim's parents stated that their daughter left the house on the afternoon of January 9 after being summoned by a local youth.
“She has been missing ever since. We believe she was gang-raped before her body was concealed. We demand that the perpetrators be swiftly located and face severe punishment,” expressed a family member following the discovery of the body on Monday evening.
