Athens/New Delhi, Sep 19 (NationPress) Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday reached out to PM Narendra Modi, expressing the Hellenic Republic's backing for the swift finalization of a mutually advantageous India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and support for the upcoming AI Impact Summit scheduled for next year.
Mitsotakis also extended warm greetings to Prime Minister Modi on his birthday, to which PM Modi responded with sincere gratitude.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), "Both leaders acknowledged progress in their bilateral relationship across various domains, including trade, investment, technology, shipping, defence, security, connectivity, and people-to-people ties. They reiterated their dedication to further enhancing the India-Greece Strategic Partnership."
"Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed Greece’s support for the expedited conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement and for the success of the AI Impact Summit to be hosted by India in 2026. They also shared perspectives on regional and global matters of common interest. The leaders agreed to maintain communication," the statement added.
The relationship between India and Greece, founded on shared cultural values and a commitment to promoting economic growth, collaboration in security and defence, and maritime cooperation, was elevated to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ during PM Modi’s visit to Greece in August 2023.
The two nations have also been closely collaborating in various multilateral forums.
In February 2024, Mitsotakis made a State visit to India—the first bilateral visit from a Greek Head of State or Government in 15 years—where both nations further solidified and deepened their strategic partnership.
Both leaders reiterated that the shared values of democracy, freedom, international peace and security, a rules-based international order, respect for international law including UNCLOS, and human rights are crucial to their growing strategic relationship.
Moreover, Prime Minister Modi and Mitsotakis discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) aimed at enhancing connectivity between India and Europe through collaboration in trade, commerce, investment, technology, energy, logistics, ports, and infrastructure.
