Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday, 21 September 2026, reaffirmed that the state would continue to rely on the support and cooperation of NITI Aayog to convert its development vision into ground-level reality. The Chief Minister made the remarks during a meeting with NITI Aayog Member Dr Joram Aniya at his office in Aizawl, according to a senior official of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Key Discussions at the Meeting

The Chief Minister and the NITI Aayog member covered a wide range of issues critical to Mizoram's development. Among the priorities discussed were strategies to attract greater tourist inflow to the state, the effective utilisation of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) upon its completion, strengthening ginger processing and value addition, and expanding Atal Tinkering Labs to more schools across the state.

Welcoming Dr Aniya to Mizoram, Lalduhoma expressed appreciation for the policy think tank's attentiveness to issues raised by the state and sought its continued backing for development initiatives.

NITI Aayog's Assurance

Dr Aniya assured Chief Minister Lalduhoma that NITI Aayog would maintain close collaboration with Mizoram across all initiatives aimed at accelerating its development. Dr Aniya is currently in Aizawl to attend the NITI Aayog Regional Workshop on the Northeastern Region, and has previously visited Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and other Northeastern states, holding meetings with Governors and Chief Ministers on development priorities.

The Kaladan Project and Connectivity Push

The KMMTTP holds strategic importance for Mizoram as a landlocked Northeastern state. The project is designed to eventually link Mizoram with Paletwa and Sittwe Port in Myanmar, offering an alternative multimodal connectivity corridor that could significantly reduce logistical costs and open new trade routes. Effective utilisation of the project post-completion remains a key agenda for the state government.

Mizoram's Ginger Economy

NITI Aayog declared Mizoram the 'Ginger Capital of India' in 2025, recognising the state's large-scale ginger production and its growing contribution to the sector. The renewed focus on ginger processing and value addition is part of a broader state strategy to strengthen agriculture, create economic opportunities, and improve returns for local farmers through processing and marketing of locally produced commodities.

The high-level engagement comes as the Centre and Northeastern states work to accelerate regional development under coordinated policy frameworks, with NITI Aayog playing an increasingly active role as a facilitator between state governments and central schemes.
