Jaipur, July 5 (NationPress) Tension enveloped the town of Jahazpur in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district after a 25-year-old man was killed by a mob on Friday evening, triggered by a minor traffic incident. In response, local residents have organized a complete shutdown for Saturday, demanding justice and swift police action.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded when a vehicle carrying four young men from Tonk Cantonment accidentally hit a handcart while navigating through Jahazpur’s main market. The group, who had come to attend a family gathering, found themselves surrounded by an enraged mob shortly after the collision.
What started as a verbal confrontation quickly spiraled into violence. Approximately 20 individuals reportedly joined the cart vendor in attacking the youths. One of the victims, Sitaram Keer (25), was forcibly removed from the vehicle, thrown onto the ground, and brutally assaulted by the mob. Despite his repeated apologies and offers to compensate the cart owner for the damages, witnesses reported he was mercilessly attacked.
Due to damage inflicted on the car during the beating, Sitaram was rushed to the hospital on a motorcycle but was pronounced dead. His three companions were subsequently taken to the police station for questioning.
Late Friday night, the victim’s family staged a sit-in protest outside the government hospital, demanding the immediate arrest of all involved. They were supported by local MLA Gopichand Meena, who engaged in discussions with the demonstrators.
Police have subsequently filed a murder case against 36 individuals—16 identified and 20 unidentified. Bhilwara Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Singh confirmed that one suspect is in custody. “An individual is being questioned, and further evidence is being collected. Those responsible will face justice,” he stated.
Deputy Narendra Kumar Pareek added that the primary suspect, identified as Sharif, the son of Chand Mohammad and the owner of the handcart, was apprehended late Friday night.
To avert any further unrest, police forces from 10 neighboring stations have been dispatched to Jahazpur. Although the situation remained calm on Saturday, shops remained closed as a sign of protest and solidarity with the grieving family.
