New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam convened on Friday to assess the fundamental aspects of their bilateral partnership, including advancements made under the Special Economic Package, during their meeting in New Delhi, coinciding with the AI Impact Summit.
Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to collaborating closely to enhance the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership, particularly in utilizing emerging technologies for the benefit and prosperity of their citizens, as noted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) following their discussion.
“We evaluated the crucial elements of our bilateral relationship, emphasizing the progress achieved through the Special Economic Package. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Mauritius’ development goals under Vision MAHASAGAR and our Neighbourhood First policy,” the MEA stated.
Ramgoolam acknowledged that this was his third engagement with PM Modi recently, following their discussions in Mauritius (March 2025) and Varanasi last September.
“This is a clear indicator of the strengthening relationship between Mauritius and India... Thank you, Shri Narendra Modi Ji, for your warm reception, hospitality, and collaboration,” remarked the Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Last week, PM Modi received a call from Ramgoolam as the two leaders discussed the progress in various cooperative initiatives between their nations ahead of their meeting at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
“I was pleased to hear from my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. We reviewed the advancements in the extensive cooperation between India and Mauritius since our memorable meeting in Varanasi last year,” PM Modi shared on X post-call.
“We reiterated our commitment to fortify the special, historic, and people-centric connections that bind our two nations. India and Mauritius will persist in their collaborative efforts to achieve common objectives of peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. I eagerly anticipate welcoming him to India for the AI Impact Summit next week,” he added.
India and Mauritius maintain a close and unique relationship anchored in shared historical, cultural, and interpersonal ties. As India’s significant maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), Mauritius is integral to India’s Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy,’ serving as a vital partner in the Global South.
Following PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius in March 2025, Ramgoolam undertook a State Visit to India in September 2025, marking his first overseas bilateral engagement in his current term.
During their delegation-level talks in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi and his Mauritian counterpart thoroughly evaluated the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between their nations and identified new avenues for deeper collaboration across sectors of mutual interest aimed at fostering shared prosperity.
“It is a source of pride for India to be a trusted partner in Mauritius' development. Today, we have established a Special Economic Package tailored to the needs and priorities of Mauritius. This initiative will bolster infrastructure, generate new employment opportunities, and enhance health services,” PM Modi stated at a joint press briefing alongside Ramgoolam, where he announced India's special economic package to support Mauritius in infrastructure, employment, and healthcare sectors.
