Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 5 June described Daman as a 'living example of Mini India', celebrating the Union Territory's remarkable demographic diversity and its emergence as a convergence point for communities from every corner of the country. Addressing a large public gathering in Daman, Modi said the region's character was defined by the presence of people from different states, languages and cultures.

What Modi Said

'A few years ago when I came among you, I had said that our Daman was rapidly becoming a Mini India. Today, I can see that on my left is all of Bengal and on my right is all of Assam,' the Prime Minister said, drawing a vivid picture of the territory's cross-regional population. He added: 'The diversity here, the presence of people from different regions of the country, gives one a beautiful glimpse of the whole of India.'

Decades of Visits and Development

Modi noted that he had been visiting Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli for several decades — including before he became Chief Minister of Gujarat and later as Prime Minister. 'Whenever I come here and see the governance model, it gives me immense satisfaction. Every time I feel that compared to my previous visit, the region has advanced miles ahead on the path of development,' he asserted. He credited local administration and officials for translating long-term vision into effective governance on the ground.

Key Projects Launched

According to the Prime Minister, a set of projects spanning connectivity, tourism, healthcare and urban development were launched on Friday in Daman. Modi said these initiatives would open new avenues for young people and meaningfully improve quality of life across the Union Territory. He noted that generations of residents had long dreamt of better infrastructure, healthcare facilities and educational opportunities — aspirations he said were now becoming reality.

Spirit of Unity on Display

Modi thanked residents for turning out in large numbers, saying their participation itself reflected the spirit of unity that defines India. This comes amid a broader push by the Centre to highlight model governance in Union Territories as templates for development. Notably, Daman and Diu along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli were merged into a single UT in January 2020, and the region has since been positioned as a showcase for centrally administered development. All eyes will now be on the pace of execution of Friday's announced projects and their measurable impact on the UT's residents.
