New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended his heartfelt congratulations to Republican Party member Donald Trump on his momentous return to the White House for a historic second term. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States during a ceremony held at the Capitol Rotunda.
In a message posted on X, PM Modi expressed: “Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I eagerly anticipate our collaboration once more, aimed at enhancing our nations and creating a brighter future for the globe. Wishing you all the success in your term ahead.”
The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice John Roberts.
Outgoing President Joe Biden and Trump shared a ride to the Capitol for the oath-taking ceremony following a traditional tea gathering at the White House with their wives, Kamala Harris and her successor J.D. Vance, along with their spouses.
Jill Biden and Melania Trump traveled to the Capitol in a separate vehicle, as did Kamala Harris and her successor J.D. Vance.
This marks only the second occasion that the swearing-in has occurred indoors; the previous instance was in 1985 when President Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term.
Prior to the ceremony, Biden greeted Trump at the White House with the words: “Welcome home,” as reported by the media.
Guests began to arrive at the Capitol Rotunda for the indoor ceremony instead of the customary outdoor setting.
This was only the second instance of the swearing-in occurring indoors; the last time was in 1985 when President Ronald Reagan took the oath for his second term.
Trump’s return to the White House is noteworthy as it represents only the second time in American history that a President has served two non-consecutive terms, the first being Grover Cleveland at the end of the 19th century.
The ceremony was attended by Trump’s cabinet nominees, including Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, who is anticipated to be the first confirmed as early as Monday.
Trump commenced Monday’s inauguration events with a private service at St John’s Church alongside the incoming First Lady Melania Trump, J.D. Vance, his wife Usha Vance, and several cabinet members.
Notable attendees of the swearing-in ceremony included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, and Google’s Sundar Pichai.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush, as well as Barack Obama (minus his wife Michelle Obama), also attended the oath-taking ceremony, a tradition that President Trump broke by not attending Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
