Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden on Sunday, 17 May to a ceremonial welcome that included a Swedish Gripen fighter jet escort as his aircraft entered Swedish airspace and a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at the airport. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson personally received Modi on the tarmac — a gesture the Indian PM described as a 'kind gesture' — marking his second visit to Sweden, the first having been in 2018 for the inaugural India-Nordic Summit.

Members of the Indian community turned out in large numbers, waving flags of both India and Sweden and chanting 'Modi Modi' as the Prime Minister arrived. The welcome ceremony included cultural and orchestra performances. In a particularly noted moment, Swedish opera singer Charlotta Huldt performed 'Vaishnava Jana To' — the devotional hymn associated with Mahatma Gandhi — in honour of the visiting Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister posted a series of messages on X documenting his arrival. 'The warmth and affection of the Indian community in Gothenburg were truly heartening. Their deep connection with India and their contribution to strengthening India-Sweden ties make us all very proud,' he wrote. In a separate post, he outlined the agenda: 'I will be meeting Prime Minister Kristersson with the aim of advancing the India-Sweden friendship in trade, investments, innovation, defence and more.'

He also noted that the visit would include participation in the European Business Round Table for Industry, alongside Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with the aim of deepening investment linkages between India and Europe.

Diplomatic Significance of the Visit

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described Sweden as an 'important partner for India in areas including technology, sustainability, innovation and Research and Development,' adding that the visit 'will impart fresh momentum to the India-Sweden relationship.' The two Prime Ministers are scheduled to review the full spectrum of bilateral ties and explore new avenues for cooperation in trade, according to an MEA statement.

Modi arrived in Sweden after concluding a visit to the Netherlands, making Gothenburg the second leg of his European tour. The Gripen escort — Sweden's frontline fighter aircraft — was a notable protocol gesture, underlining the defence dimension of bilateral engagement that Modi himself flagged in his arrival post.
