Jaipur Metro Phase-2: Modi to lay ₹13,037-crore foundation stone on Saturday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Rail Project Phase-2 on Saturday, 5 July 2025, during the inauguration ceremony of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Refinery at Pachpadra in Rajasthan's Balotra district, according to government officials. The ₹13,037-crore project will develop a 41-km North-South Metro corridor, marking the most ambitious urban transit expansion in Jaipur's history.
What the Project Covers
The Phase-2 corridor will run from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, spanning 41 km and comprising 36 metro stations. The route will connect key destinations including the Jaipur International Airport, Sitapura Industrial Area, Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA), Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Sawai Man Singh Stadium, the Collectorate, Jaipur Railway Station, Ambabari, and Vidyadhar Nagar.
To ensure uninterrupted service near the airport zone, the project includes underground stations that will integrate with the existing metro network. Plans are also underway to operate feeder bus services connecting nearby towns such as Chaksu and Chomu to the nearest metro stations at Prahladpura and Todi Mod, extending regional connectivity beyond the city limits.
First Construction Package Already Awarded
Following Union Cabinet approval, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (JMRCL) has issued a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the first construction package, valued at more than ₹918.04 crore. This package covers the design and construction of a 12-km elevated corridor from Prahladpura to Pinjrapol Gaushala, along with 10 elevated stations at Prahladpura, Manpura, Bilwa Kalan, Bilwa, Goner Mod, Sitapura, Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC), Kumbha Marg, Haldighati Gate, and Pinjrapol Gaushala.
A dedicated spur line connecting the corridor to the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 depot will also be constructed as part of this package.
Implementation and Governance Structure
The project will be implemented by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Union government and the Rajasthan government. This shared-ownership model mirrors the structure used for metro projects in other major Indian cities and is designed to ensure coordinated funding and accountability between the Centre and the state.
Ridership and Impact on Jaipur's Urban Mobility
Jaipur Metro's existing Phase-1 corridor — a 11.64-km stretch running from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar with 11 stations — currently serves around 50,000 passengers daily. With Phase-2 operational, daily ridership is projected to rise to nearly 2.5 lakh passengers, with the potential to exceed 4 lakh commuters in subsequent years.
This comes amid rapid urbanisation in Jaipur, which is among India's fastest-growing Tier-1 cities. The Phase-2 network is designed to integrate metro services with the city's airport, railway station, and major bus terminals, creating a seamless multi-modal transport ecosystem. With the foundation stone to be laid Saturday, the project's execution timeline will be closely watched by urban planners and commuters alike.
