Jaipur Metro Phase-2: Modi lays foundation for ₹13,037-crore 41-km corridor
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 5 July 2025, virtually laid the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Rail Project Phase-2, a ₹13,037-crore infrastructure push that will add a 41-km North-South corridor to the Pink City's public transport network. The event was held during the inauguration ceremony of the Rajasthan Refinery at Pachpadra in Balotra district.
What Phase-2 Covers
The new corridor will run from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, spanning 36 metro stations and linking major industrial and residential nodes — including Sitapura Industrial Area, Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA), Jaipur International Airport, Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, SMS Stadium, the Collectorate, and Jaipur Railway Station. An underground station will be built in the airport zone to ensure an integrated, uninterrupted network across the city.
The project will be executed by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Union government and the Rajasthan state government. A Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for works worth more than ₹918.04 crore under the first package has already been issued, covering a 12-km elevated corridor from Prahladpura to Pinjrapol Gaushala with 10 elevated stations.
What the Leaders Said
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said that whenever the nation sets a goal, Rajasthan stands at its core. He noted that the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, alongside the inauguration of a new terminal at Jodhpur Airport, would further accelerate the state's growth. He added that upon completion, Jaipur's metro network will extend beyond 50 km, improving convenience for residents and enhancing the travel experience for tourists.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said Prime Minister Modi has gifted Rajasthan the Phase-2 project. 'The new Metro corridor will provide significant relief from traffic congestion in Jaipur. Today, the Prime Minister has laid its foundation stone, and we are confident that he will also inaugurate the completed project,' Sharma said.
Ridership and Network Impact
Jaipur Metro currently operates Phase-1 — an 11.64-km North-West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar with 11 stations — recording an average daily ridership of around 50,000 passengers. With Phase-2 complete, daily ridership is projected to rise to nearly 2.5 lakh passengers, with expectations of exceeding 4 lakh in subsequent years.
Plans are also being prepared to run feeder bus services connecting nearby towns — including Chaksu and Chomu — to the nearest metro stations at Prahladpura and Todi Mod, making regional connectivity more accessible.
Broader Infrastructure Context
This comes amid a broader Central push to modernise urban transport in Tier-2 and Tier-1 cities across India. Jaipur's Phase-2 is notable for its explicit industrial integration — directly linking two major industrial estates — signalling a shift from purely commuter-focused metro planning to economically-targeted corridor design. The multi-modal integration with the airport and railway station further positions the corridor as a backbone for the city's long-term mobility framework.
