PM Modi to lead Yoga Day 2026 celebrations in Kolkata on June 21
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 national celebrations at Kolkata's historic Red Road on Sunday, 21 June 2026, the Ministry of AYUSH confirmed on Monday, 15 June, as it formally launched the nationwide and global countdown to the event.
Theme and Venue
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav unveiled this year's theme: 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'. The theme spotlights yoga's capacity to promote physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life as global populations grow older.
'Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. The real challenge is to ensure that these added years are healthy, active, independent and meaningful. Yoga offers a time-tested and holistic pathway towards healthy ageing,' Jadhav said at the curtain-raiser programme held in New Delhi.
Global Scale of Celebrations
More than 210 Indian Missions abroad, in coordination with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), will organise Yoga Day events at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide. The Ministry of Culture will simultaneously hold special programmes at 100 iconic locations across India.
Jadhav noted that yoga has evolved into a shared global movement since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India's proposal for an International Day of Yoga in 2014. 'Today, yoga has transcended borders, cultures and languages. It has emerged as a shared global movement that brings people together in the pursuit of health, harmony and well-being,' he said.
Guinness Record and Pre-Event Activities
A nationwide live yoga session held on 14 June drew participation from more than four lakh people simultaneously, setting a new Guinness World Record, according to the minister.
In the run-up to the main event, the AYUSH Ministry is conducting the 'Gangotri to Gangasagar: Ganga Tat Yoga Yatra' from 13 to 20 June, linking yoga with environmental awareness, river culture, and community participation. Kolkata itself will host Doud se Dhyan on 19 June and Vande Yogam on 20 June, blending fitness, wellness, patriotism, and cultural heritage ahead of the main celebration.
What the Government Said
Calling upon citizens to participate in large numbers, Jadhav described yoga as 'one of India's greatest contributions to humanity' and urged people to adopt it as a daily practice. The curtain-raiser event in New Delhi marked the formal beginning of the official countdown, with the government positioning IDY 2026 as both a national health initiative and a demonstration of India's soft power on the global stage.
With Modi's presence at Red Road set to anchor the national programme, all eyes will be on Kolkata on 21 June as India marks a dozen years of the United Nations-recognised observance.
