PM Modi inaugurates Pachpadra Refinery and Jaipur Metro Phase 2 foundation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 4 July inaugurated India's first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Balotra, Rajasthan, and virtually laid the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Phase 2 project — marking one of the most significant infrastructure days the state has seen in recent years.
What Happened at Pachpadra
The Prime Minister arrived at the Pachpadra refinery at around 12 noon, where he inspected the facility's state-of-the-art control room and interacted with engineers and technical experts to understand the crude oil refining process. He also watched a documentary on the project's development and planted a sapling on the refinery campus before formally dedicating it to the nation.
A public meeting was held inside a specially-constructed dome within the refinery premises, with seating for nearly 5,000 people. A large turnout of BJP workers, local residents, youth, and women attended the event. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma welcomed the Prime Minister by draping him with a traditional shawl and presenting a decorative jharokha as a mark of respect.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and senior officials accompanied Modi, who spent nearly two hours at the complex.
Jaipur Metro Phase 2 Foundation Stone
During the Pachpadra event, Prime Minister Modi also virtually laid the foundation stone for Jaipur Metro Phase 2. The ceremony was simultaneously broadcast at Jaipur's SMS Indoor Stadium, where former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, Urban Development Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra, Jaipur MP Manju Sharma, legislators, and hundreds of citizens attended the live event.
Jodhpur Airport Inauguration Earlier in the Day
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi arrived at Jodhpur Airport at around 10:40 am, where he inaugurated the airport's new terminal building. He toured the modern passenger terminal, viewed its architectural model, and launched the revised UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, aimed at expanding regional air connectivity across the country. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief Minister Sharma, and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu were present at the inauguration.
A Delayed Inauguration — and the Reason Why
Notably, the refinery's inauguration had originally been scheduled for 21 April, but was postponed after a fire broke out on 20 April in the facility's Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU). Despite rain and strong winds sweeping through Pachpadra on the eve of the rescheduled event — damaging roadside hoardings and banners — officials and workers restored all arrangements overnight, ensuring the programme proceeded as planned on 4 July.
What This Means for Rajasthan
The Pachpadra refinery, as the country's first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, represents a major step in domestic energy infrastructure. Combined with the Jaipur Metro Phase 2 foundation and the Jodhpur airport upgrade, Saturday's events signal a concentrated push to modernise Rajasthan's industrial and urban connectivity landscape. How quickly these projects translate into jobs and economic activity on the ground will be the real measure of their impact.
