Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make history with a State visit to Slovakia from 14 to 16 June, marking the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European nation since its independence in 1993. Slovakia's Ambassador to India, Robert Maxian, has described the visit as a 'landmark moment' in bilateral relations, saying it will deepen cooperation across investment, trade, innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), and student and labour mobility.

Why This Visit Is Historic

No Indian Prime Minister has visited Slovakia in the more than three decades since the country became an independent state. Ambassador Maxian placed the visit in the context of a sustained diplomatic build-up, noting that high-level engagement between the two countries began in earnest in 2022. 'The Prime Minister of India and Slovakia have never met before. From this point, we are considering it as a landmark moment in our bilateral relationship,' Maxian said.

He traced the trajectory of that relationship: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to Slovakia in 2022, President Droupadi Murmu's visit to Bratislava in April 2022, and Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini's trip to India in February 2025 for the AI Impact Summit. 'The same is given as a package of the high-level political dialogue and framework, which has been created for our further cooperation,' Maxian said.

Key Meetings and Agenda

During the visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and separately meet President Pellegrini. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that the visit will reaffirm India's commitment to strengthening ties in sectors including trade, investment, and automobile and railway manufacturing.

Notably, the visit is scheduled for 15 June as the primary day of engagements, with diplomatic ceremonies expected to follow a structured programme across the three-day stay.

Agreements and MoUs on the Table

Ambassador Maxian confirmed that India and Slovakia are expected to sign several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), though he declined to detail them in advance. 'There are a number of them. But I would like to keep it rather as a surprise, and once the meeting on the 15th of June and all the ceremonies are ready, we would like to update you on those agreements which have been signed,' he said.

He added that the visit is expected to 'further boost bilateral ties in all areas of cooperation, starting from investment, trade, innovation, artificial intelligence, student mobility and labour mobility.'

Broader Significance for India-Slovakia Relations

India and Slovakia have maintained relatively low-profile but steadily growing ties, with Slovakia emerging as a key player in Central Europe's automotive and engineering sectors — areas of strategic interest to Indian manufacturers. This comes amid India's broader push to deepen partnerships across Europe, particularly as global supply chains reconfigure post-pandemic.

The visit is also being seen as part of New Delhi's active European outreach, following a series of high-level engagements with EU member states. With multiple MoUs expected and a first-ever Prime Ministerial meeting on the agenda, the outcomes of the 14–16 June visit will set the tone for India-Slovakia ties for years ahead.
