Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav finds himself at the centre of a sharpening political storm on 24 June, as the Indian National Congress (INC) escalates allegations of improper land transactions involving him, his family members, and relatives — while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mounts a coordinated defence. The controversy has moved swiftly from state to national stage within two days, with Congress taking the matter to its headquarters in New Delhi.

What BJP's Rakesh Singh Said

Rakesh Singh, a senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh minister, addressed reporters in Jabalpur on Wednesday, striking a notably calibrated tone. He said there should be no objection to an investigation into allegations related to assets or land transactions if there is evidence of wrongdoing, and that facts should be placed before the public.

However, Singh drew a sharp distinction between accountability and political weaponisation. He accused the Congress of attempting to convert the issue into a malicious propaganda campaign, arguing that allegations should not become a tool for political misinformation.

How the Controversy Escalated

The row gained momentum over the preceding two days. The Madhya Pradesh Congress first raised the issue in Bhopal before taking it to the party's national headquarters in New Delhi — a deliberate escalation signalling the opposition's intent to sustain pressure beyond the state level. Congress leaders have argued that since the allegations concern relatives of a sitting Chief Minister, an independent judicial inquiry is essential for transparency and public accountability.

This is not the first time a state BJP government has faced land-deal-related allegations from the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, a state where land acquisition politics has historically been a flashpoint.

BJP's Coordinated Response

The party's response has been swift and organised. State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal released a video statement late Tuesday night, defending Yadav and dismissing the allegations as misleading. Khandelwal indicated that family members and relatives of the Chief Minister would soon place their version before the public.

On Wednesday, several ministers and senior BJP leaders also publicly backed the Chief Minister. Notably, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav himself has not yet issued any public statement on the controversy.

What the Silence Signals

The Chief Minister's continued silence is the most conspicuous element of the BJP's crisis management strategy. Whether this reflects a deliberate legal caution or a wait-and-watch approach ahead of a formal rebuttal remains unclear. The absence of a direct denial from Yadav is likely to sustain opposition pressure in the days ahead.

With the Congress having already internationalised the issue to its national leadership, the political temperature in Madhya Pradesh is unlikely to ease soon.
