Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced on Saturday, 1 August 2026 that the Madhya Pradesh government will develop Jabalpur as a Metropolitan City — placing it alongside Bhopal and Indore in the state's urban hierarchy — and paired the declaration with a cluster of industrial, health, and education commitments for the city.

The announcement, attributed to CM Dr. Mohan Yadav, frames Jabalpur's elevation as the next logical step in the state's urban expansion strategy. Bhopal and Indore already have approved and operational metro rail projects respectively; Jabalpur's metropolitan designation signals that the same scale of integrated infrastructure investment is now being targeted at MP's third major urban centre in the east of the state.

The Madhya Pradesh government has consistently used central urban schemes — including the Smart Cities Mission launched in 2015, under which both Bhopal and Indore were early entrants — as a launchpad for state-level upgrades. CM Yadav declared that Jabalpur's existing Medical University will be developed 'AIIMS ki tarz par' — on the lines of AIIMS — referencing the national network of premier government medical institutes that set the benchmark for tertiary care and research in India. The central government's Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), active since 2003, provides a funding pathway for exactly this kind of state medical college upgradation, though specific allocations for Jabalpur have not been confirmed.

Sandipani schools to bring quality education to assembly segments

Sandipani Vidyalayas — model schools offering quality, modern education — will be established across the assembly constituencies of Jabalpur district. The schools are framed as a state-level initiative to ensure students in the region access education comparable to top institutions, rather than leaving for larger cities. The name invokes the ancient gurukul tradition, signalling a blend of modern curriculum with cultural grounding.
