Indore, Jan 2 (NationPress) In the wake of the health emergency affecting Indore's Bhagirathpura region due to contaminated water that has claimed numerous lives, the Madhya Pradesh government has responded by taking decisive measures against high-ranking officials of the municipal corporation of the city.
The state authorities have issued a show-cause notice to Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and have transferred Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisonia from his position immediately.
Additionally, Pradeep Nigam, who served as the Superintendent Engineer overseeing the Water distribution department, has also been dismissed.
Simultaneously, the state government has instructed the Indore Municipal Corporation to promptly fill essential vacancies.
This intervention followed a significant meeting led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at his Bhopal residence, during which he provided various directives.
“I assessed the measures being taken by the state government regarding the Indore contaminated drinking water incident with the Chief Secretary and other senior officials today and issued necessary directives. I also reviewed the report from the Additional Chief Secretary of the State Urban Development Department,” Chief Minister Yadav shared on X.
“I instructed the issuance of show-cause notices to the Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Additional Commissioner, and I mandated the immediate removal of the Additional Commissioner from Indore,” he further elaborated on X.
The contaminated water crisis in Indore has resulted in the tragic deaths of several individuals, with over 200 still hospitalized in more than 27 medical facilities, raising serious concerns regarding the state administration and the Indore Municipal Corporation.
Criticism has been voiced not only by the Opposition Congress but also from the BJP, both demanding stringent action against those accountable for this calamity.
Renowned BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, has expressed her alarm over the Bhagirathpura incident, stating that the deaths caused by contaminated water have brought a sense of “shame” and “disgrace” to the entire state administration.
In a series of posts on her official social media account X, Bharti remarked, “Indore has been celebrated as the cleanest city in the nation, but this grotesque situation, filled with filth and poisonous water, has claimed so many lives, and the death toll continues to escalate every day.”
In another post, without naming anyone, the former Chief Minister criticized the state government, saying, “Who claims our plans have failed in Indore? If you cannot accomplish anything, why are you simply sitting and consuming Bisleri bottles? There is no justification for such a sin.”
The uncertainty surrounding the actual number of fatalities due to the contaminated water in Indore's Bhagirathpura area continues to spark debate and speculation, with diverging opinions from the state administration and Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav.
On Friday, Mayor Bhargava indicated that he had received reports of 10 deaths attributed to a diarrheal outbreak caused by contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area.
He also specified that the “state's health department has only acknowledged four deaths due to the diarrheal outbreak in Bhagirathpura. However, I have received information concerning 10 fatalities due to this outbreak.”
As per a recent health bulletin released by the Indore district administration on Friday, over 1,400 individuals have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea in Bhagirathpura over the last nine days.
“Currently, there are 208 patients admitted across various hospitals in Indore, with 27 receiving intensive care. Additionally, 101 patients were discharged on Friday,” according to the report from the state government.
