Is Kerala CM Vijayan Challenging US 'Imperialist Aggression' Against Venezuela?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 8 (NationPress) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan vehemently criticized the United States on Thursday, labeling it as an extraordinary attack on Venezuela's sovereignty. He urged democratic entities around the globe to unite and voice their opposition against what he termed American 'imperialist aggression'.
Against the backdrop of rising global tensions, Vijayan emphasized that the situation in Venezuela should alarm people worldwide, as similar interventions could potentially occur in any nation.
The Chief Minister accused the United States of meddling in Venezuela's internal matters, effectively taking its elected leadership hostage. He stated that the U.S. has been attempting to dismantle a democratically elected government while enforcing economic sanctions that he argued are debilitating for the Venezuelan populace.
Vijayan asserted that such actions exhibit a troubling disregard for international law, human rights, and fundamental humanitarian principles.
He placed Venezuela's plight in a broader historical context, recounting the U.S.'s long-standing and violent history of military interventions across various global regions.
From Vietnam to Iraq, Syria to Libya, and throughout numerous Latin American countries, he claimed that American interventions have led to extensive civilian casualties and prolonged destruction.
Millions of innocent lives have been lost in the pursuit of political and economic gains, he alleged, noting the historical deployment of nuclear and chemical weapons, the repercussions of which continue to affect future generations.
He mentioned that the devastation inflicted on nations like Iraq and Syria has regressed them by decades and destabilized the entire West Asian region.
Vijayan argued that what Venezuela currently faces could transpire anywhere, asserting that global solidarity is crucial to resist such actions.
He drew a parallel to India’s quest for international support following the terror attack in Pahalgam, highlighting the importance of building a global consensus against terrorism.
“The same international solidarity is the right of the Venezuelan people today,” the Chief Minister stated.
Vijayan also took aim at the Union government, accusing it of attempting to downplay the situation and demonstrating what he referred to as subservience to the United States.
He pointed out that the statement from the Ministry of External Affairs failed to even mention the United States and criticized New Delhi for not protesting against repeated comments made by the U.S. President that, according to him, insulted India and undermined its sovereignty.
The Chief Minister also criticized the Congress party, accusing it of following a similar approach. He cited the decision by the Telangana Congress government to name a road after U.S. President Donald Trump, despite Trump's threats to India regarding increased import tariffs.
Additionally, he accused sections of the media of echoing U.S. narratives, claiming attempts are being made to downplay what he described as a severe violation of a nation's sovereignty.
Vijayan insisted that the measures taken against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife should raise concerns and provoke protests among individuals committed to democracy and human dignity.
