Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 14 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and current president of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, demonstrated her support for Iran on Saturday, calling on the Indian government to reassess its stance towards the nation. She highlighted the profound historical ties between Kashmir and Iran.
In a press conference held on Saturday, Mehbooba Mufti mentioned that a gathering of PDP leaders and former legislators had adopted a resolution expressing solidarity with Iran and commended the citizens of Kashmir for their non-violent demonstrations in support of the Iranian populace.
She urged the people of Kashmir to offer prayers for the Iranian community and the broader Muslim Ummah. She emphasized the rich historical and cultural connections between Iran and Kashmir, noting that Islam was introduced to Kashmir via Iran.
“We share a profound civilizational and spiritual bond between the two regions. It is essential for Muslim nations to rally behind Iran, as conflicts disrupt global economic stability,” she stated.
Mehbooba Mufti also called upon Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to reconsider the detentions of individuals who participated in protests against Israel, insisting on the release of those still imprisoned.
On the topic of the release of activist Sonam Wangchuk, Mufti welcomed the decision but remarked that such actions should not have been necessary in the first place, considering Wangchuk's advocacy for environmental protection.
She further referenced the imprisoned separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, acknowledging the legal struggles faced by his daughter in her efforts for his release.
Mehbooba Mufti pointed out that while some individuals can access legal help, many economically disadvantaged prisoners are unable to afford legal representation and deserve equal attention and justice.
Earlier this week, she paid a visit to the Iranian embassy in New Delhi, signing the condolence book for the martyrdom of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, following the joint US-Israeli air strikes on Tehran on February 28.
