Srinagar, March 4 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, expressed her disappointment on Wednesday regarding the perceived “silence” from the Indian government and the ruling National Conference (NC) concerning the recent US-Israel military actions against Iran.
During a press conference held in Srinagar, Mufti stated, “Over the past several days, the US and Israel have conducted bombing raids on Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”
“Historically, we (India) have been allies with Iran. When sanctions were placed on us, Iran provided us with oil without charge. The current global situation is in utter chaos,” she added.
“The silence of both the Government of India and the NC in Jammu & Kashmir regarding the open aggression by the US and Israel against Iran, as well as the assassination of its Supreme Leader, does not imply that those who voice their concerns should face legal repercussions,” the PDP head remarked, alluding to Khamenei's assassination.
“Our leaders have failed to denounce these military strikes. When citizens demonstrated their support for Iran, many were detained, including women.”
“Some young women from the Shalteng area of Srinagar have also been taken into custody. What can we say about our nation in such circumstances?”
“The BJP has already jeopardized the nation by engaging in divisive Hindu-Muslim politics,” she asserted.
Criticizing the inaction of Muslim nations, she remarked, “All Muslim countries are merely bystanders in this situation, indirectly supporting the US by granting them military bases. I believe the recent agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia was primarily aimed at confronting Iran.”
Mufti described the legal actions taken against NC MP, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, and former Srinagar mayor, Junaid Azim Mattu, as “unjustified” and called for their immediate dismissal.
She was responding to the Jammu and Kashmir Police's decision to file cases against Mehdi and Mattu on Tuesday for allegedly disseminating “false, fabricated, and misleading information” on social media.
“I urge for the release of all detainees and the withdrawal of charges against Aga Syed Ruhullah and others,” she demanded.
Mufti encouraged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
“Engage in peaceful protests. I also condemn the restrictions imposed on the media,” she stated.
During the press briefing, the PDP President burned posters of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
