Sukhdeo Bhagat Urges Respect for National Sovereignty Amid Iran-Israel Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat expressed his views on the escalating Iran-Israel conflict and the recent assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, underlining the necessity of honoring national sovereignty.
“Every nation possesses the right to determine its government and elect its leaders. This is their prerogative, and we must refrain from interference,” Bhagat stated in an interview with IANS, further asserting, “Imposing your views through power is never acceptable.”
On the larger issue of the Iran-Israel situation, he remarked, “Two points are crucial. Regarding India’s stance, we oppose aggression towards any sovereign state; our aim is peace and dialogue. According to the UN Charter and Article 51 of our Constitution, wars are violations of these principles. Conflict is inherently problematic.”
He further noted that past leaders of India have consistently favored diplomacy over conflict. “Reflecting on leaders like Nehru Ji and Indira Ji, there is an evident silence from our current government on Iran. India's position is ambiguous. Dialogue is not an overnight development; it requires strategy. We maintain good relationships with Gulf nations, which we should leverage effectively,” Bhagat remarked.
His statements follow the recent US-Israel airstrikes that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Reports from Iranian state media indicate that the strikes also claimed the lives of four of Khamenei’s family members, including his daughter, grandchild, and son-in-law.
US President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s demise via Truth Social, labeling it the “greatest opportunity” for Iranians to regain control of their nation, calling the airstrikes “justice for the people of Iran and for all great Americans, as well as others globally who have suffered due to his actions.”
