Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) Heavy rainfall has relentlessly struck Mumbai, causing chaos throughout the city with extensive waterlogging, severe traffic jams, and interruptions to public services. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rain over the next 48 hours.
The downpour has brought many crucial areas of Mumbai to a halt, including the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle and the Gandhi Market area in Sion, resulting in significant traffic disruptions. The Andheri Subway was also forced to close due to flooding.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all schools and colleges operating during the afternoon session.
“Considering the continuous rainfall since morning and prioritizing the safety of students, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shri Bhushan Gagrani declared today as a holiday for all schools and colleges scheduled to function after 12 noon,” the BMC stated in a post on X.
The civic body has activated all departments and has urged citizens to limit non-essential travel. For emergency services and official information, residents can contact the BMC helpline at 1916.
In light of the severe weather, airlines such as Akasa Air and IndiGo have issued travel advisories, warning passengers to prepare for traffic delays and potential disruptions en route to the airport.
Akasa Air posted on X: “Due to heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Goa, and Pune, we expect slow-moving traffic and congestion on roads leading to the airport. To ensure a smooth travel experience, please plan for additional travel time.”
IndiGo also released a similar advisory: “Rain continues to affect Mumbai, impacting road travel in many areas. If you are flying today, we suggest leaving early and checking flight updates through our app and website. Our airport teams are ready to assist.”
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport authorities have also advised passengers to verify their flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.
“Passengers should arrive earlier than usual to allow sufficient time for security checks. Thank you for your cooperation as we aim to ensure smooth travel,” the advisory stated.
As Mumbai contended with the heavy rains, the state government took swift action. Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar visited the BMC Disaster Control Room to assess the flooding situation and ongoing emergency response efforts.
Shelar confirmed that the IMD has issued a red alert for the city for the upcoming 48 hours.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has convened a review meeting to evaluate the situation across Maharashtra. The government and administration will remain on high alert for the next two days,” he stated.
Many low-lying areas in Mumbai are still underwater. Reports of tree falls and wall collapses have also surfaced.
BMC teams are monitoring developments around the clock. The Mumbai Police Commissioner and Traffic Police have been instructed to maintain vigilance and implement all necessary safety measures.
Shelar urged the public to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
“Please follow all advisories and warnings issued by the administration. Your safety is our priority,” he emphasized.
Mumbai Police also issued a public safety advisory on X: “Dear Mumbaikars, caution is advised as heavy rainfall continues under an Orange Alert. Waterlogging and low visibility are reported in multiple areas. Please avoid non-essential travel and plan your commute carefully. Our officials are on high alert and prepared to assist. In case of emergencies, dial 100 / 112 / 103.”
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pune, cautioning of moderate to heavy rainfall in the following days. Intense showers began in Pune on Monday morning, disrupting daily life. Numerous areas in the city have reported waterlogging and traffic congestion.
“Citizens are advised to remain cautious and avoid flooded areas,” the IMD stated, urging residents to stay updated with weather forecasts.
