Mumbai, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Mumbai Crime Branch has apprehended two individuals in the Dadar locality, confiscating a significant haul of MD (Mephedrone) drugs worth approximately Rs 10.08 crore on the global market.

As per police reports, the action was initiated following intelligence received by a senior officer and encounter expert Daya Nayak.

Responding to the tip-off, a unit from the Crime Branch raided a guest house near Dadar railway station, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of 5 kg 40 grams of Mephedrone -- a synthetic stimulant known as a New Psychoactive Substance (NPS).

The detained suspects have been named as Jahangir Sheikh (29) and Senual Sheikh (28).

Authorities disclosed that as the Crime Branch team approached, the suspects tried to escape but were quickly caught. A comprehensive search uncovered the illegal substances, which are classified as a commercial quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Post-seizure, a case was filed at Matunga Police Station under Sections 8(C), 22(C), and 29 of the NDPS Act. With necessary legal clearance, the Crime Branch has assumed control of the investigation to identify the source and network associated with this illicit drug operation.

Daya Nayak, a seasoned officer recognized for his past role as an encounter specialist, has played a crucial part in combating crime in Mumbai. He gained notoriety during the late 1990s for eliminating several gangsters linked to the underworld figures Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan.

Mephedrone, commonly known as MD or Meow Meow, is a synthetic stimulant that replicates the effects of methamphetamine and MDMA (Ecstasy). Its popularity in the illegal drug scene has surged due to its euphoric and stimulating effects. The substance poses significant health hazards, including paranoia, hallucinations, and addiction.

The Crime Branch is currently conducting further inquiries to unveil the larger network associated with this drug shipment and to track down additional individuals engaged in the trafficking.
