New Delhi, May 22 (NationPress) A 37-year-old principal from a Mumbai college has been apprehended by the police in the Borivali region for making repeated sexual advances towards a minor student, according to an official report released on Thursday.

The MHB Colony Police have also filed molestation charges against the principal, who is accused of harassing the student for nearly a year.

The 17-year-old victim, hailing from Nagpada in south Mumbai, endured the misconduct for a long time due to fears of social repercussions. However, when the harassment escalated, she decided to approach the authorities for help, as per police statements.

Reports indicate that the principal pressured her to engage in a romantic relationship, with the support of the girl’s family leading to the filing of the police complaint.

“The principal faces charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with allegations of molestation and sexual harassment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which carries a maximum penalty of three years,” stated an official.

Last April, a treasurer at a South Mumbai college, aged 60, was also reported by Gamdevi Police for allegedly inappropriately touching a student during a meeting.

This recent case in Borivali brings back memories of an earlier incident involving the principal of Mithibai College, who faced accusations of sexually harassing a lecturer. The police only registered an FIR in that case after the victim escalated the matter to the Prime Minister’s Office.

In a separate incident from 2022, a principal from a Mumbai government college was charged for making casteist remarks directed at a student. The Azad Maidan police acted under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The affected student from Palghar recounted that the incident transpired while she was in class, when the principal entered and belittled her based on her tribal background.
