Key Takeaways
Belagavi (Karnataka), Feb 3 (NationPress) A man was heinously murdered, allegedly due to a long-standing feud tied to an elopement that occurred over ten years ago, in Hoolikatti village near Saundatti taluk of Belagavi district, as reported by police on Tuesday.
The victim, Basappa, was viciously attacked more than 16 times with a machete by the suspect, identified as Irayya, on Monday night. According to police, the accused even posed for photographs with his foot on the victim's body until law enforcement arrived.
Authorities revealed that the murder stemmed from a personal vendetta dating back to 2015 when Basappa allegedly eloped with Irayya’s mother and never returned. At the time, Irayya was a minor and was reportedly traumatized by his mother's departure, blaming Basappa for the incident.
Police further disclosed that Irayya had been actively looking for both Basappa and his mother for several years. Recently, Basappa returned to the area and was residing in Basadoni village while constructing a house. Upon discovering his return, Irayya allegedly waited for him near Hoolikatti.
When Basappa rode into the village on his motorcycle on Monday night, Irayya confronted him and attacked him with a machete, leading to his instant death.
After the murder, the alleged perpetrator himself contacted the police and was promptly apprehended at the scene. The victim's remains have been sent to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) for a postmortem examination.
A case has been opened at the Saundatti police station, and a thorough investigation is currently ongoing.
Additionally, in a related event reported on February 2, police in Davanagere district apprehended a recently married woman and her lover for allegedly driving her husband to suicide. The couple's elopement and alleged harassment led to the tragic death of her husband.
The deceased, Harish, had married Saraswati from Hulikatte village merely three months prior. She reportedly eloped with her lover, Kumar, on January 23. Although the family located her two days later, a distraught Harish took his own life. In his note, he claimed he had not committed any wrongdoing and cited harassment and threats following the elopement.
