Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda held a comprehensive virtual meeting on Saturday, 23 May 2026 with senior officials of West Bengal to review healthcare delivery and public health infrastructure, releasing the first tranche of ₹527 crore from the Central share of the National Health Mission (NHM) allocation for the state.

Nadda announced that a total of ₹3,505 crore has been approved for West Bengal under NHM to strengthen health systems and expand services, of which the Central share stands at ₹2,103 crore. The first tranche of ₹527 crore was released on the day of the meeting. The minister said the engagement was 'guided by the vision of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi' and reiterated the Prime Minister's 'unwavering commitment to extending all possible support for strengthening the healthcare sector in the State.'

The virtual review covered five programmatic priorities: expanding healthcare infrastructure, implementation of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, strengthening disease surveillance, the nationwide HPV vaccination campaign for adolescent girls, and accelerating the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

Policy Backdrop

The National Health Mission, launched in 2005 and restructured in 2013 by merging the National Rural Health Mission and the National Urban Health Mission, provides flexible, performance-linked funding to states for health infrastructure and service delivery. Fund releases under NHM are typically structured in tranches tied to utilisation and programmatic milestones.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, launched in 2018, is the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme, offering up to ₹5 lakh annual cover per family. West Bengal has historically operated a parallel state health insurance scheme, Swasthya Sathi, and had not previously adopted PM-JAY. With this meeting, the state is set to become the 36th state or Union Territory to implement the scheme.

The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was intensified from 2018 with a target of eliminating tuberculosis by 2025 through active case finding and treatment support. The nationwide HPV vaccination programme for adolescent girls was announced for universal rollout following pilot programmes conducted between 2016 and 2021.
