Bhubaneswar, July 16 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Odisha and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has vehemently criticized the excessive police actions directed against Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers and leaders during their lawful protest at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar. This demonstration sought justice for the FM College girl student who tragically passed away on Monday after a self-immolation attempt due to alleged sexual harassment by a faculty member.
In a post shared on the social media platform X, Patnaik asserted that the fundamental right to protest is currently jeopardized in the state under the ruling BJP government.
He stated, “The right to democratic protest is under serious threat in #Odisha. Today, the @bjd_odisha exercised its constitutional right to conduct a peaceful demonstration, mourning the loss of a 20-year-old girl student—a victim of systemic negligence and betrayal.”
The BJD leader also expressed alarm regarding the use of water cannons and rubber bullets against BJD members who were marching peacefully towards Lok Seva Bhawan for a gherao.
“I categorically condemn the heavy-handed measures taken by the police and the government to undermine the BJD's peaceful march. The police acted in an overtly biased manner, resorting to rubber bullets when such extreme measures were entirely unwarranted,” Patnaik added.

“A few days ago, a senior IPS officer was filmed near the Chief Minister’s residence directing his team to injure protesters and incentivizing them for doing so. Today, two former ministers have suffered broken legs and may need surgical intervention. Other senior BJD leaders, including a female Rajya Sabha member and numerous party workers, faced brutal police aggression,” Patnaik remarked.
He demanded accountability from the state government regarding the alleged orders for police to apply excessive force against demonstrators.
Patnaik emphasized that his party will persist in their struggle until justice is achieved for the deceased FM College student.
“The government clearly owes an explanation for such directives. The BJD will steadfastly continue its battle until justice is served for the FM College girl who lost her life under tragic circumstances.
