Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar on Thursday, 11 June announced sweeping accountability measures for the party's elected representatives, including mandatory third-party performance evaluations for all ministers, MLAs, and MLCs. The announcement, made at a rally marking NCP's 27th Foundation Day in Mumbai, signals a sharp organisational reset ahead of upcoming local body elections.

Key Accountability Mandates

At the heart of the new framework is the deployment of independent, third-party agencies to evaluate the performance of every NCP minister, MLA, and MLC. Each NCP minister will be assigned guardianship of four districts and must dedicate three days a week to party organisation work. Ministers will also be required to host taluka-level Janata Darbars — public grievance meets — to strengthen grassroots outreach.

MLCs will serve as district chiefs, Rajya Sabha MPs will manage two districts each, and MLAs will take charge of neighbouring constituencies where the party finished second in previous elections.

Pawar's Warning on Personal Ambition

'For too long, some have prioritised personal growth over the party's growth. That dynamic changes now,' Sunetra Pawar declared. She made clear that future government opportunities, cabinet slots, and state corporation board appointments will be determined strictly by loyalty, performance, and merit — a direct signal to those seen as placing individual advancement above collective party interest.

Tribute to Ajit Pawar and Party Direction

The Foundation Day also served as the party's first anniversary since the passing of former national president Ajit Pawar, affectionately referred to as 'Dada'. Sunetra Pawar acknowledged the 'profound void' left by his absence, noting that the year's theme — 'Dedication, Struggle and Resolve' — was entirely dedicated to him. She recalled that Ajit Pawar had accepted the national presidency on 30 June 2023 and, within a two-and-a-half-year tenure, established a national identity for the NCP.

Reaffirming political alignments, the NCP reiterated its commitment to the NDA at the federal level under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as to the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. Sunetra Pawar stressed, however, that these alignments would not dilute the party's core progressive values.

Urban Expansion and Electoral Preparation

Looking ahead to constituency delimitation, Sunetra Pawar noted that urban areas are expected to see a significant rise in legislative seats. While the NCP retains strong rural roots, a targeted urban expansion drive is underway. Booth Level Agents (BLAs) have been directed to coordinate closely with the Election Commission's Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for voter list verification. An intensive Graduate and Teacher Constituency voter registration drive will run from 15 June to 15 October 2026.

Sunetra Pawar also cited recent victories in Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls and extended special gratitude to voters of Baramati for delivering record mandates in recent bye-elections. Welfare schemes including the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a proposed farm loan waiver, and free electricity for agricultural water pumps were highlighted as pillars of the alliance government's public standing.

Concluding her address, Sunetra Pawar invoked the party's clock symbol: 'We have never turned our ships around looking at the storm. The journey of the clock's hands will not stop, and the NCP will never back down from the battlefield of struggle.' The convention closed with a unified call to carry the campaign slogan — 'Gharoghari NCP, Manomani NCP' (NCP in every home, NCP in every heart) — to every corner of Maharashtra. With local body elections on the horizon and delimitation reshaping the electoral map, how swiftly the new accountability framework translates from mandate to measurable action will define the NCP's next chapter.
