NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar backs Mission Poshan 2.0 on 8th anniversary
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Sunday, 26 July underscored the significance of Mission Poshan 2.0, the Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry's flagship national nutrition programme, as the initiative marks eight years since its launch under POSHAN Abhiyaan. Rahatkar's endorsement came through a repost on X of the Ministry's official message, spotlighting the mission's role in connecting children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers to nutrition, health, and care services.
What Mission Poshan 2.0 Stands For
According to the WCD Ministry, the programme's evolution over eight years reflects a growing emphasis on convergence, technology-enabled governance, and community participation in tackling India's nutrition challenges. The transition from POSHAN Abhiyaan to Mission Poshan 2.0 represents a deliberate shift toward improving service quality, expanding early childhood care, and strengthening last-mile delivery systems.
By integrating nutrition with health, early childhood education, and community engagement, the mission adopts what the Ministry describes as a comprehensive approach to supporting vulnerable populations. Officials noted that nutrition is directly linked to human capital development — better nutrition yields improved health outcomes, stronger learning capacity, and higher workforce productivity.
Poshan and the Viksit Bharat Vision
The Ministry framed continued investment in nutrition as essential to India's broader developmental ambition. 'As India advances towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, continued investments in nutrition, early childhood development and service delivery systems will remain critical for building a healthy, productive and resilient population,' the Ministry said. This positions Mission Poshan 2.0 not merely as a welfare programme but as a structural pillar of long-term national growth.
Pune Leadership Training: A 10-Point Plan for Women's Safety
Separately, Rahatkar on Saturday shared details of a Leadership Development Training Programme conducted for District Magistrates and District Superintendents of Police in Pune district, Maharashtra, under the initiative titled 'Catalysts for Change'. During the closing session, officers were urged to act on a 10-point action plan aimed at ensuring women's safety, empowerment, and dignity.
The action plan called for regular audits of women welfare schemes, digital monitoring of all schemes, expeditious appointment of Protection Officers, Child Marriage Prohibition Officers, and POSH Local Committee members. It also stressed strong coordination among One Stop Centres, Women Helplines, DLSA, Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTU), and Crimes Against Women (CAW) Cells.
Further, the plan mandated quarterly Gender Review Meetings chaired by District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police, time-bound completion of FIRs, investigations, and charge sheets in crimes against women, and regular gender sensitisation training for police personnel. Officials were also directed to run public awareness campaigns on women's rights, helplines, and available support services.
Officials Present at the Pune Event
The training programme was attended by Maharashtra's Additional Director General of Police Ashwati Dorje, former Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh Praveen Dixit, NCW Member Secretary Sudeep Jain, Pune District Magistrate Jitendra Dudi, Pune Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill, and Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zilla Parishad Gajanan Patil, according to an official statement.
Together, Rahatkar's twin interventions — on nutrition policy and district-level women's safety — signal the NCW's intent to push both preventive welfare and enforcement accountability simultaneously in the lead-up to the Viksit Bharat 2047 framework.
