NCW Orders Maharashtra DGP to Investigate Illegal Egg Extraction Scheme Targeting Vulnerable Women
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 5 (NationPress) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated suo motu action following a media report that uncovered an alleged illegal operation concerning the extraction and sale of eggs from financially disadvantaged women in the Badlapur region of Maharashtra.
Characterizing the report as "disturbing", the Commission indicated that the findings suggest an organized network exploiting women through repeated commercial egg donations, which clearly contravenes the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021.
The cited report states that the racket seemingly targeted economically vulnerable women, persuading or pressuring them into undergoing multiple egg extraction procedures for financial compensation.
According to the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, egg donation is permitted only once in a lifetime, and any form of financial incentives or commercialization is strictly forbidden.
Initial police inquiries suggest that at least 40 women may have been victimized by this racket. One particular case highlights a victim who underwent egg extraction procedures an alarming 33 times, raising significant concerns about health risks and medical malpractice.
The NCW has strongly denounced this as an "organized exploitation," emphasizing that it not only jeopardizes women’s health but also undermines their dignity, bodily autonomy, and legal protections.
NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has formally addressed the Director General of Police in Maharashtra, demanding an exhaustive, impartial, and timely investigation into the issue.
The Commission has instructed local law enforcement to identify the entire network involved in the alleged racket, including any clinics, medical practitioners, agents, or intermediaries who may have facilitated or profited from these illegal activities.
Additionally, authorities have been directed to ensure that the affected women receive necessary medical care, counseling, and protection.
The Maharashtra DGP is required to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) to the Commission within five days.
