Chennai, Oct 6 (NationPress) A fact-finding team of NDA Members of Parliament investigating the Karur stampede, which resulted in 41 fatalities and over 100 injuries during a rally led by actor and TVK Chief Vijay, has labeled the incident a “totally preventable catastrophe attributed to severe administrative negligence, inadequate planning, and utter mismanagement.”
In a comprehensive report presented to the BJP leadership, the MPs asserted that the disastrous crowd surge stemmed from “an absolute failure in fundamental safety protocols,” pointing out significant oversights in crowd management and official supervision.
They observed that although the venue was suitable for only 2,000 to 3,000 individuals, approximately 30,000 attendees converged for Vijay’s rally, leading to perilously overcrowded conditions.
According to the team, thousands of supporters began arriving from early morning, even though the event was slated for noon.
Vijay’s late arrival—almost seven hours behind schedule—left the restless, tightly packed crowd in agitation.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the stampede erupted as Vijay ascended his campaign vehicle to wave at his supporters. As fans surged forward for a better glimpse, panic ensued, with women and children among those caught in the crush.
Some witnesses shared that in a bid to soothe the crowd, Vijay tossed water bottles to parched fans, but the scramble for them incited further turmoil.
The report also chronicles heartbreaking individual tragedies, including a father mourning the loss of his two young daughters, aged 12 and 8.
Numerous victims reportedly fell into open roadside drains and were later discovered deceased. The situation further deteriorated when the power supply failed, and the backup generator failed to activate, enveloping the area in darkness.
“The District Collector not only sanctioned an inadequate venue but also neglected to implement safety measures or effective crowd control,” the report stated.
The MPs strongly advocated for disciplinary actions against officials responsible for granting permissions and overseeing the event.
They also noted that the District Collector declined to meet the inquiry team during their visit, raising “serious concerns regarding transparency and accountability.”
Labeling the stampede as “a preventable catastrophe,” the NDA panel urged the Tamil Nadu government to establish accountability and revamp protocols for large public events to ensure such an incident does not recur.
