TDP-led NDA sweeps Andhra Pradesh municipal polls, wins 7 mayor posts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh has swept the state's municipal elections, capturing power in nearly all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) as counting trends on Tuesday, 3 November showed the alliance dominating across both corporations and municipalities. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its allies — the Jana Sena Party (JSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — have together bagged the posts of mayors in seven municipal corporations, with the coalition leading in five more.
Key Results at a Glance
The NDA secured mayoral posts in seven corporations outright and was ahead in five others. The opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) was leading in just one corporation. At the municipality and nagar panchayat level, TDP and its allies won the posts of chairpersons in 73 bodies and were ahead in eight more, while the YSRCP won one chairpersonship and was leading in two. The coalition also claimed the majority of corporator and councillor seats across the state.
Mayors Declared Across Seven Corporations
Mukka Sravani of TDP was elected Mayor of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, the largest in the state. M. Srinivas Prasad (TDP) won the mayoral contest in Tirupati, while K. Lakshmi Aparna (TDP) was elected Mayor of Guntur. K. Hemalatha (TDP) emerged victorious in Chittoor, and Sheikh Abdullah Abida (TDP) was declared elected Mayor of Machilipatnam. Vijaya Pratyusha (TDP) won in Kurnool, while Jana Sena candidate Reddy Appalanaidu was elected Mayor of Eluru Municipal Corporation in West Godavari district.
Voter Turnout and Polling Details
Polling was held on Sunday across 92 urban local bodies, covering 13 municipal corporations and 79 of the 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats. According to the State Election Commission, voter turnout stood at 62.16% — out of 96,89,061 registered voters, 60,22,411 cast their ballots. Counting began at 138 counting centres at 8 am on Tuesday. Elections for 17 chairperson posts were unanimous, and both chairpersons and ward members were elected unopposed in eight municipalities and nagar panchayats.
NDA Seat-Sharing Arrangement
Under the alliance's internal seat-sharing agreement, TDP contested the mayor posts in 10 municipal corporations, leaving two for JSP and one for BJP. For the 70 chairperson posts where polling was held, TDP fielded 49 candidates, JSP 17, and BJP four.
Political Reactions
TDP Working President Nara Lokesh urged restraint in victory. 'We accept it with humility as the people's blessing for the good governance of the last two and a half years,' he posted on X, adding, 'Now that the municipal elections are over, our only focus is service, for every citizen, beyond party lines. There is no room for arrogance.' He congratulated candidates of all three NDA partners and their workers for their collective effort.
YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy rejected the outcome, accusing the coalition of 'resorting to rigging at every stage' of the polls. He also alleged complicity by the police and the State Election Commission — charges that the authorities have not formally responded to as of the time of publication.
This result consolidates the NDA's grip on Andhra Pradesh following its landslide victory in the June 2024 state assembly elections, which ended Jagan Mohan Reddy's five-year tenure. A clean sweep at the urban local body level signals that the coalition's political consolidation is extending well below the state legislature.
