NDMC launches WFH, EV parking discount and shuttle buses in green drive
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Thursday, 14 May rolled out a sweeping sustainability package for its workforce, with Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal announcing work-from-home (WFH) provisions, a 50 per cent discount on parking charges for electric vehicles, and shuttle bus services linking civic offices to employee residential colonies — all aimed at cutting fuel consumption and vehicular pollution in the heart of the national capital.
Work-From-Home Policy
With immediate effect, up to 33 per cent of Group 'B' and Group 'C' employees in identified departments will be permitted to work from home on a need basis. Chahal said the move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for fuel conservation, environmental protection, and the promotion of a digital work culture. The initiative is designed to reduce daily commuting pressure and make administrative workflows more efficient through digital means.
EV Parking Concession
To incentivise eco-friendly transportation, a proposal has been moved to offer a 50 per cent concession in parking charges for electric vehicles across all NDMC parking areas. The discount is intended to accelerate the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles among both staff and the general public using NDMC-managed facilities.
Shuttle Bus Network
NDMC will launch shuttle bus services starting Friday, initially covering four major residential colonies: Palika Awas, Sarojini Nagar; Palika Gram, Laxmibai Nagar; Amrit Kal Niwas, Jor Bagh Road; and Bapu Dham Flats, Chanakyapuri. The network will subsequently be expanded to 14 additional residential locations with the deployment of 16 buses, significantly broadening the commute relief for employees across the city.
Additional Sustainability Measures
Every Monday, all Heads of Departments and senior officers will be required to commute via the Metro or other public transport modes as part of a dedicated sustainability initiative. For official field inspections and site visits, officers will use shared 16-seater vans to minimise individual vehicle usage. Employees more broadly will be encouraged to adopt carpooling and shared mobility systems to reduce dependence on private vehicles.
The NDMC Education Department will also introduce online classes after the summer vacation period, alongside awareness sessions for parents and students on digital learning, environmental responsibility, and sustainable practices.
Chahal underscored that as the civic body managing the capital's core administrative zone, NDMC carries a special responsibility to lead by example in environmentally responsible governance. With the shuttle network expansion and WFH rollout both in motion, the full impact of the measures is expected to become clearer over the coming weeks.
