A Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Hyderabad on 26 October 2026 arrested four Nepali nationals in connection with the murder of Tanuja Ranjan, wife of retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ray Vinay Ranjan, who was killed at their Prashasan Nagar residence on the intervening night of 7–8 May 2026. The arrests came more than five months after the crime, following a multi-state investigation that stretched from Hyderabad to the India-Nepal border.

Who Was Arrested

The four accused were apprehended near Nampally Railway Station on Monday. They have been identified as Dharma Tiruwa alias Kalpana, 26, a domestic worker from Surkhet district, Nepal, who had been employed at the victim's residence in Jubilee Hills; Ganesh B.K. alias Ganesh Bishwakarma alias Dinesh Thapa, 31, a labourer last residing in Pune; Chandra Bahadur Tamang alias Ranjeet Thapa alias Shanker Chandra Lama alias Kancha, 44, a cook whose listed Indian address is in Gurugram, Haryana; and Ganesh Bahadur Shahi, 37, a watchman also residing in Pune. Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar announced the arrests at a press conference on Monday. Two other accused reportedly remain absconding, and teams are continuing efforts to trace them. Two further accused had been arrested earlier in the case.

How the Crime Was Planned and Executed

According to the police account, Dharma arrived in Hyderabad in June 2025 through a relative and began working as domestic help at the Jubilee Hills residence for a monthly salary of approximately ₹20,000. During her employment, she allegedly remained in contact with a Nepal national identified as Bikas, based in Pune, who repeatedly inquired about the household's assets and eventually proposed a robbery in return for a share of the proceeds.

In April 2026, Dharma reportedly travelled to Pune, ostensibly to visit her ailing father, and came into contact with other alleged gang members. On 4 May, when her employer departed for Bengaluru, she allegedly alerted the group. Several accused then convened at Kalamboli in Raigad district, Maharashtra, before travelling to Pune and subsequently to Hyderabad.

On the morning of 7 May, two of the accused allegedly met Dharma near the residence to survey the premises. That evening, the full group assembled at Ravindra Bar near the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station area and split into two teams — one tasked with entering the house and carrying out the robbery, the other stationed near Nampally railway station as a lookout. Police say Dharma allegedly opened the door to allow entry during the night. When Tanuja Ranjan woke up, the intruders allegedly gagged and restrained her, causing her death by suffocation. The group then broke open cupboards and fled with approximately 225 grams of gold jewellery and other valuables through the rear gate.

The Flight and Division of Stolen Property

After the crime, the accused allegedly moved towards Kazipet, retreated into isolated hilly terrain, and divided the stolen property into nine equal shares before splitting into smaller groups and fleeing towards Nepal. Members reportedly disposed of the valuables at multiple locations along the way.

On 22 May, Task Force teams arrested two persons — Sunil Bahadur Aauji alias Sunil Pariyar and alleged receiver Dilip Bahadur Mijar alias Sonar — and recovered 26 grams of the stolen property from them.

Five-Month Multi-State Investigation

The SIT's investigation spanned Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Patna, Delhi, Lucknow and Uttarakhand, and included field inquiries in remote and hilly areas near the India-Nepal border. Police said local informers proved critical in tracking the suspects' hideouts, travel routes, and contacts. The SIT was formed specifically to probe a pattern of property offences attributed to Nepali gangs across three police commissionerates in the region. Notably, this case is part of a broader concern over organised cross-border criminal networks exploiting domestic employment as a means of reconnaissance for targeted robberies.

What Comes Next

With two accused still at large, the SIT's search operations are ongoing. Police have not yet detailed the quantum of stolen property recovered or accounted for beyond the 26 grams retrieved in May. Formal charges are expected to be filed shortly, and the case is likely to raise fresh questions about cross-border criminal coordination and the adequacy of verification mechanisms for domestic workers.

Point of View

Not improvisation. What should concern policymakers is the absence of any systematic verification layer for domestic workers that could flag unusual contact patterns — a gap this case may finally force authorities to address.
