Would Even Netaji Have Been Summoned for SIR Hearing If He Were Alive?

Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 23 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted on Friday that the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state is so extreme that even Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose would have faced a notice for a hearing had he been alive. Speaking at a celebration for Netaji's 129th birth anniversary at Red Road in central Kolkata, the Chief Minister criticized the indiscriminate issuance of hearing notices concerning claims and objections on the draft voters’ list.
“I would not be surprised if even Netaji was called for a hearing had he been alive. His grand-nephew has already received a notice,” Banerjee remarked.
The Chief Minister also accused the Union government led by Narendra Modi of trying to distort India's history and downplay Netaji's contributions.
“The Planning Commission was Netaji’s brainchild. The current Union government has dismantled the Planning Commission and replaced it with NITI Aayog. It is unclear what this new body is intended for,” she stated.
Banerjee further condemned the Centre for its failure to declare Netaji’s birthday a national holiday. “This is truly regrettable, especially since many in India are unaware of the date of his passing,” she added.
Reiterating her opposition to the ongoing SIR in West Bengal, the Chief Minister called for statewide protests, arguing that the process has inflicted significant hardship on the populace.
“Those accountable for the distress caused by the revision exercise will eventually face repercussions,” she asserted, without naming any specific individuals or organizations.
Banerjee also connected the revision process to reports of deaths and suicides in the state. “Many lives are being lost. Approximately 110 individuals have died in West Bengal. Each day, three or four people are taking their own lives out of fear. Why is no case being filed against the Election Commission of India? The Union government must bear the responsibility. I do not wish to name any specific political entity,” she concluded.
