Kolkata, Dec 2 (NationPress) Another suspect has been taken into custody from Karnataka in relation to the gold robbery case in Kolkata, as confirmed by police on Tuesday.
The individual has been identified as Masumbabu Mallick, who hails from the Hooghly district of West Bengal.
Following the robbery that occurred in the Sinthee area on the northern fringes of Kolkata, Mallick had absconded to Karnataka.
The victim of the crime was also from the Hooghly district.
Previously, police had apprehended a man named Saidul Mondal in connection with the theft of gold valued at approximately Rs 3 crore from a local gold merchant.
During Mondal's interrogation, Masumbabu's name surfaced.
At Mondal's suggestion, Mallick was arrested in Karnataka.
Investigators discovered that Saidul and Masum had conspired together for the robbery. Nonetheless, the police are on the lookout for additional accomplices involved in the incident.
According to police sources, there is an ongoing investigation to ascertain whether the two arrested individuals have engaged in similar thefts in the past.
Despite the arrest of two suspects, the entirety of the stolen gold remains unaccounted for.
“Another individual has been detained in relation to the gold robbery case. He has been apprehended in Karnataka and is being transported back to West Bengal on transit remand,” stated a senior officer from West Bengal police on Tuesday.
In October, over two kilograms of gold, amounting to around Rs 3 crore, was stolen from gold trader Sanjit Kumar Das.
Elaborating on the sequence of events, police quoted the complainant, “Sanjit was returning home on his scooter after purchasing gold bars. As he was about to enter his workshop in the Sinthee region, he was suddenly confronted by unidentified individuals on a motorcycle. They brandished firearms, looted the gold, and fled the scene.”
The investigation into this case is ongoing, as reported by the police.
A manhunt has been initiated for other suspects involved in the case, according to police sources.
