Namrup, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, made a visit to the Namrup fertiliser complex located in the Dibrugarh district on Sunday to assess the preparations on the ground ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit, where he is set to lay the foundation stone for the fourth fertiliser plant on December 21.
This new brownfield ammonia-urea facility will be constructed within the existing site of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL), with a financial commitment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore. The project is viewed as a significant move towards fortifying Assam’s industrial framework and enhancing fertiliser accessibility throughout the Northeast and nearby eastern states.
“The fourth fertiliser plant at Namrup symbolizes the Prime Minister’s profound dedication to the Northeast and his determination to bolster India’s agricultural and industrial autonomy,” stated Sarbananda Sonowal after his site review.
During the visit, Sonowal evaluated logistical arrangements, security measures, and the overall preparation for the Prime Minister’s event. He also monitored the advancement of preliminary tasks and collaborated with officials to ensure that all arrangements for the foundation-laying ceremony are executed efficiently and punctually.
Once operational, the new fertiliser facility is anticipated to greatly enhance the supply chain for urea and related products in the Northeast, lessen the reliance on distant production sources, and ensure timely availability for farmers.
The plant is projected to have an annual production capacity of around 1.25 million metric tonnes and is expected to create significant direct and indirect jobs, as per officials.
Sarbananda Sonowal also emphasized the broader developmental momentum in Assam and the Northeast under the Prime Minister’s guidance, referencing substantial investments in connectivity, infrastructure, and industrial capability that have opened new avenues for youth, farmers, and workers across the region.
The Namrup initiative is projected to usher in a new era of industrial advancement in Assam, bolster fertiliser security for the Northeast, and contribute to the national objective of enhancing agricultural productivity and farmers’ incomes.
Senior state ministers, local legislators, district administration officials, and representatives from civic and development bodies accompanied the Union Minister during the inspection.
