The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), headquartered in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, has trained representatives from 96 countries and now operates 13 campuses across India and abroad, cementing its position as the world's only university dedicated exclusively to forensic sciences. The institution is also evaluating further international expansion after receiving formal proposals from multiple nations.

From Gujarat to the World

Founded in 2009 in Gandhinagar under the then Gujarat Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NFSU was designated an Institution of National Importance (INI) in October 2020. Its international footprint now includes a campus in Jinja, Uganda, with additional overseas campuses under consideration. The university's academic model — combining education, research, training and investigation — was developed under founding Vice-Chancellor and senior forensic scientist Padma Shri J.M. Vyas.

Mobile Forensic Vans and Field Operations

One of NFSU's most visible contributions to India's criminal justice infrastructure is the Mobile Forensic Investigation Van programme. More than 300 such vans, designed and manufactured in India, are currently deployed across over 17 states and Union Territories. Staffed by trained forensic experts and equipped with specialised kits, the units operate round the clock to assist law enforcement in scientific crime scene investigation and evidence collection.

Innovation, Patents and Exports

NFSU has established two dedicated innovation bodies: the Forensic Innovation Council under the Companies Act, and the Forensic Innovation Centre supported by the Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP). Together, they provide advanced laboratory infrastructure for researchers and start-ups. More than 20 forensic products developed through these initiatives are currently being exported to countries including the United States, Australia, Israel, Singapore and several European nations. The university has also secured patent approvals in both India and the United States.

Disaster Victim Identification and Specialised Research

NFSU played a critical role in the aftermath of the Air India Flight 171 crash near Ahmedabad Airport on 12 June last year, when its forensic experts completed DNA profiling to establish the identities of all 265 victims. Active research at the university spans DNA forensics, drone forensics and digital forensics — disciplines increasingly central to modern criminal investigation and national security. The institution has also launched the Centre of Excellence for Nutritional Testing for Sportspersons (CoE-NSTS), described as a unique facility in India conducting nutritional assessments and prohibited-substance testing for athletes.

At a special interaction titled 'My Life: My Story' organised by NFSU, India TV Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma highlighted the threat of misinformation and manipulated digital content. 'In the era of social media, fake news and deepfake content have become matters of concern. At such a time, the contribution of the National Forensic Sciences University in addressing the problem of such misleading videos and creating awareness in society will prove significant,' Sharma said. Spiritual leader Bhaishri Rameshbhai Oza, during a campus visit, remarked: 'Every problem has a solution. Whenever a criminal creates a problem, a world-renowned university like NFSU remains committed to finding its solution.' Students also spoke positively about the institution's infrastructure and faculty. As NFSU continues to expand its national and international presence, it remains focused on forensic education, innovation, capacity-building and support for law enforcement worldwide.
