NIA Detains Suspects in Assam Linked to Terrorism

Guwahati, Dec 12 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended an individual from Goalpara district in Assam and has detained two others due to their suspected affiliations with the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM).

In a coordinated effort with the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF), the NIA conducted searches across Goalpara and interrogated several individuals.

According to sources, the NIA arrested an imam named Sahanur Alom from a mosque during a raid in the Tukura area of Goalpara.

Alongside Sahanur, two additional individuals were apprehended for further questioning during the late-night raid on Wednesday.

Sources indicate that another person, who had been detained in October for connections to JeM in Goalpara, revealed Sahanur Alom's name to the NIA.

Nine individuals from Goalpara were part of the ten people arrested by the NIA in Assam on October 5, suspected of having links to terrorist organizations based in Pakistan.

Previously, the Assam Police transferred two cases regarding the ULFA-I bomb threat on Independence Day this year to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Director General of Police for Assam, G.P. Singh, mentioned that the police had registered ten cases related to the Independence Day incident, where the banned militant group ULFA-I claimed to have planted explosives in at least 25 locations statewide.

“Of these ten cases, two will be passed to the NIA team. We have sent a letter to the central government asking for immediate takeover of these cases,” Singh stated.

DGP Singh also noted that the state police had made considerable headway in investigating the ULFA-I bomb threat on Independence Day.

“In Sivasagar, we have detained four individuals suspected of involvement in planting explosives. One of them is believed to be significantly involved in the overall incident. For investigative purposes, I cannot provide more details, but the offenders will face consequences,” the DGP added.

He also cautioned that those attempting to hinder Assam's progress will not be tolerated.

“The state is experiencing rapid advancement in a peaceful atmosphere. This recent incident is an effort to obstruct Assam's development. While I should refrain from commenting on political matters, it is essential to uphold strict law and order in the state,” the DGP concluded.
