BJP chief Nitin Nabin rallies Telangana cadres for 2028 power bid
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Tuesday, 30 June urged party workers in Telangana to take public grievances to the streets, framing the effort as the foundation of the party's campaign to unseat the Congress government and win the state in the 2028 assembly elections. His call came on the final day of a three-day visit to Hyderabad, where he addressed the party's state executive meeting.
Key Developments at the State Executive Meeting
Nabin told party leaders that a change of government in Telangana would only come if the BJP became the authentic voice of the people on the ground. He expressed confidence that this approach would make 2028 a landmark year for the party in the state. Pointing to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he noted that the BJP had secured 35 per cent of votes in Telangana — a figure he described as evidence of steadily growing public support.
He also drew on the party's historical roots in the region, recalling that one of BJP's two Members of Parliament in 1984 was from Telangana. 'Telangana is the state where we made our lotus bloom in the very early days,' he said, adding that the BJP now governs 22 states nationally under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Attacks on the Congress Government
Nabin sharply criticised the Congress government in Telangana, alleging that it had failed to fulfil even one of its six guarantees in what he described as three years of misgovernance. He specifically cited unmet promises on an unemployment allowance and financial assistance to women.
He alleged that the Congress government in Telangana was functioning as an 'ATM for its Delhi leadership,' channelling public money through what he called the 'RR tax.' 'The hard-earned money of the people of Telangana should not go into RR tax,' he said. By contrast, he argued, the BJP-led Centre had delivered GST reforms and raised the income tax exemption limit to benefit ordinary citizens.
Central Government Schemes Cited for Telangana
The BJP chief highlighted the reach of central welfare programmes in the state, stating that more than 30 lakh farmers in Telangana are benefiting from the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme and that over 33 lakh Kisan Credit Cards have been issued. He also cited the establishment of a turmeric board in Nizamabad and the state's beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat health scheme as evidence of the Centre's commitment to Telangana.
Local Body Polls as the Starting Point
Speaking to the media after concluding his visit, Nabin said the BJP would form its own government in Telangana, and that the process would begin with the upcoming local body elections. He stressed that the party's booth-level and mandal-level committees would be central to its electoral machinery.
During his address, Nabin also referenced the BJP's recent victory in West Bengal, saying the party had defeated what he characterised as a destructive government in the home state of BJP founding leader Syama Prasad Mukherjee. He alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government had perpetuated atrocities against women, and claimed the BJP had consistently fought on their behalf.
Leaders Present
The state executive meeting was attended by senior party figures including BJP Telangana state president N. Ramchander Rao, National General Secretary Sunil Bansal, National Vice President D.K. Aruna, state in-charge Abhay Patil, Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and MP Dr K. Laxman.
With the 2028 Telangana assembly election still years away, the BJP's immediate test will be its performance in local body polls — contests that could either validate Nabin's confidence or expose the limits of the party's street-level mobilisation.
