Vashishtha Narain Singh is one of Nitish Kumar's closest political associates. He served as the JD(U) state president for an extended period and was subsequently elevated to national vice-president by Nitish Kumar. He also held a ministerial post in the government led by Lalu Prasad Yadav and was sent to the Rajya Sabha on Nitish Kumar's initiative. Owing to age and health concerns, he currently holds no organisational position and is not a member of any legislative body.

Discussions had reportedly surfaced within the party regarding the political future of Singh's son, Sonu Singh, whose name was reportedly considered for vacant Legislative Council seats — though no consensus was reached.
