The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) may soon be renamed 'Janata Dal Nitish', with Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary on Tuesday, 15 September hinting that such a decision was 'very much possible' and could materialise shortly. The proposal, floated by party National Working President Sanjay Jha, is set to be taken up at the party's upcoming National Executive and National Council meetings.

The Renaming Proposal

Vijay Kumar Choudhary, a senior JD-U legislator from Sarairanjan constituency, confirmed that Sanjay Jha had formally proposed the name change from 'Janata Dal-United' to 'Janata Dal Nitish'. A final decision, he said, would follow deliberations at the forthcoming national-level party meetings. Nitish Kumar, currently a Rajya Sabha member, serves as the JD-U National President and the party's supreme authority.

Jha, in advocating for the name change, stated it was aimed at honouring Nitish Kumar's political philosophy and principles, and ensuring future party leaders appreciate the depth of his contributions in shaping Bihar's development trajectory. Notably, Nitish Kumar — who served multiple terms as Chief Minister of Bihar — has stepped back from active electoral politics, a transition that has renewed internal discussions about the party's identity.

Opposition Pushback: RJD Calls It Crisis Management

The Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) remained sceptical of the stated rationale, alleging that the renaming move was driven by the fear of a vertical split within the JD-U. The RJD argued that with Nitish Kumar exiting active politics, the party was already staring at factional pressures, and that attaching his name to the organisation was less about honour and more about holding it together. The ruling alliance has not directly responded to this characterisation.

Broader Push: Renaming Bakhtiyarpur After Nitish Kumar

The party renaming proposal comes alongside a separate initiative from within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to rename Bakhtiyarpur — Nitish Kumar's birthplace — as 'Nitishpur'. The suggestion was made by Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM), a key NDA ally, and received endorsement from Lok Jan Shakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJP-RV) President Chirag Paswan. Together, the two proposals reflect a coordinated effort within the alliance to consolidate Nitish Kumar's political legacy.

JD-U's Stance on Uniform Civil Code

Separately, Vijay Kumar Choudhary addressed questions about the JD-U's position on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), describing it as 'too premature' to articulate a formal party stance. He indicated the party would study the Bill's provisions once they are finalised, and would then hold internal discussions as well as consult Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

'If the Bill contains no controversial provisions, there is no reason to oppose it; however, if any provision raises concerns, a request will be made to the Home Minister (Amit Shah) to address and resolve them,' Choudhary said.

What Happens Next

All eyes are now on the JD-U's National Executive and National Council meetings, where the renaming resolution is expected to be formally tabled. If approved, the party would need to comply with the Election Commission of India (ECI)'s procedures for changing a registered party name — a process that involves documentary submissions and official notification. The outcome will be closely watched as a signal of how the post-Nitish JD-U intends to define itself going forward.
