Nitish Kumar Unopposed as JD(U) National President: A Fourth Term Secured
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Nitish Kumar was unanimously re-elected as the National President of Janata Dal (United) after the deadline for nomination withdrawals passed.
With no other candidates stepping forward, Kumar secures this role for his fourth term.
Previously, on March 19, JD(U) Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha and ten senior leaders submitted Kumar's nomination at the party's office in New Delhi.
The final date for filing nominations was March 22, and as no competing nominations were received, the planned voting on March 27 was cancelled.
The JD(U) was established in 2003 with significant contributions from George Fernandes, who was the party's inaugural National President.
After him, Sharad Yadav took over, serving several terms until internal disputes led to a leadership change.
Nitish Kumar first became National President in 2016 after Yadav’s departure.
He was re-elected in 2019 but stepped aside in 2020, designating RCP Singh as his successor.
Later, in 2021, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, assumed the role.
However, ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kumar resumed the party's leadership on December 29, 2023.
With his recent unopposed election, Nitish Kumar is expected to lead JD(U) as National President until at least 2029.
Political analysts observe that while Kumar officially took leadership later, he has been a pivotal figure in the party's decisions since its inception.
His ongoing leadership is considered essential for maintaining organizational stability during this significant political period.
Interestingly, Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, has recently joined the party and is anticipated to play a vital role within the organization.
Furthermore, Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha recently.
